Federal Government Announces $30 Million Investment to Create 900 Green Jobs for Canadian Youth

OTTAWA, April 7, 2026 – The Government of Canada has announced a $30-million investment aimed at creating 900 employment and skills training opportunities for young people in the natural resource sectors.

The funding, announced by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, is designed to bolster Canada’s “climate competitiveness” by preparing the next generation for a low-carbon economy.

Focus on STEM and Natural Resources

The investment will be delivered through the Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP) – Green Jobs. The program provides wage subsidies to employers, allowing them to hire, train, and mentor youth aged 15 to 30 for up to 12 months.

Targeted sectors include:

  • Energy and Clean Technology

  • Forestry

  • Mining and Critical Minerals

  • Earth Sciences

Ten delivery organizations across the country have been selected to distribute the funding. These organizations will prioritize placements for youth in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields and those from underrepresented groups, including Indigenous youth, youth with disabilities, and those living in rural or remote communities.

A Proven Track Record

The STIP – Green Jobs program is a key component of Canada’s broader Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS). According to government data, the program has a history of high success rates, with a significant majority of participants securing full-time employment or returning to school following the completion of their internships.

Government officials emphasized that this funding is a critical step in ensuring Canada has the workforce necessary to meet its net-zero goals while providing young Canadians with meaningful, well-paying careers.

Accessibility and Application

The program is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and persons with refugee status who are legally entitled to work in Canada. Funding is available for both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations that can offer quality work experience in the natural resources sector.

As of April 2026, delivery partners have begun accepting applications for the new intake period. Interested youth and employers are encouraged to apply directly through the designated partner organizations to access the subsidies and training supports.
