TORONTO, ON — The Shanghainese Canadian Association (SCA) celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sept. 12 with its annual Mid-Autumn Festival gala, bringing together community members, business leaders and elected officials for an evening of cultural performances and celebration.
Titled “Maple & Magic City,” the event was attended by Ontario MPP Aris Babikian, Markham Regional Councillor Joe Li, Toronto City Councillor Jamaal Myers and Markham City Councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci.
Founded in 2016 as a federally registered non-profit organization, SCA promotes community engagement and cultural exchange while helping newcomers integrate into Canadian society.
“This milestone celebrates ten years of dedicated service while ushering in a new chapter of social integration and cultural exchange,” association president Jennifer Shen said.
The evening’s cultural program highlighted Shanghai’s distinctive Haipai culture, known for blending Chinese traditions with Western influences. Performances ranged from Pingtan storytelling, Yue opera, folk dance and a qipao fashion presentation to excerpts from the classical ballet Raymonda.
Artists Zhang Feng and Huang Peizhen joined groups including the Toronto Chinese Music Orchestra and Toronto Yue Opera Troupe in presenting works such as “The Bund” and “Night Mooring by Maple Bridge.”
The celebration, supported by title sponsor Top Engineering and partner cultural organizations, concluded with a banquet featuring regional dishes and traditional Mid-Autumn mooncakes.
