VANCOUVER, April 7, 2026<\/b> \u2013 The Government of Canada has announced the renewal of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI), a multi-year federal effort aimed at protecting and rebuilding struggling wild Pacific salmon populations.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made by the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, as part of the broader “Canada\u2019s Nature Strategy.” The renewal ensures continued funding and provincial collaboration to address the steep decline of salmon stocks due to climate change, habitat loss, and shifting ocean conditions.<\/p>\n

The renewed initiative focuses on four key pillars designed to stabilize and restore salmon populations:<\/p>\n

Indigenous and Regional Partnerships<\/h5>\n

A central component of the renewed strategy is the integration of Indigenous Knowledge with modern western science. The federal government has committed to increased co-management of fisheries and restoration projects with First Nations across British Columbia and the Yukon.<\/p>\n

The initiative also aligns with the Pacific Salmon Salmonid Enhancement Program, which seeks to modernize infrastructure and improve the survival rates of juvenile salmon before they enter the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n
