LANZHOU, China, July 15, 2026<\/strong> \u2014 For many of the journalists arriving in Lanzhou this week, the Yellow River was initially little more than a line on a map. By the end of their first day, it had become the setting for everyday life\u2014a place where residents live peacefully alongside the river and follow its unhurried rhythm.<\/p>\n

Journalists and digital content creators from 23 countries across six continents are in Lanzhou for a three-day reporting visit that began July 15. Held as part of the second annual Lanzhou International Communication Exchange Week, the program explores how this northwestern Chinese city is balancing river conservation, urban growth, cultural preservation and economic development.<\/p>\n

At the Lanzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, a large-scale model showed why the river is so central to the city. Lanzhou stretches through a narrow valley between mountain ranges to the north and south, and much of its urban development follows the Yellow River from east to west. A 4D presentation provided a broader visual introduction to the city, while a waterfront visit allowed the media group to experience Lanzhou\u2019s relationship with the river firsthand.<\/p>\n

Members of the delegation also rode traditional sheepskin rafts. Although the rafts are no longer used as a regular means of transportation, demonstration rides allow visitors to experience a form of river travel closely connected to Lanzhou\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The first day also brought together the international visitors and a group of young Lanzhou residents serving as city ambassadors during their summer vacation. The children introduced their hometown in their own words, sharing the perspectives of residents proud of the city in which they are growing up.<\/p>\n

The connection between past and present was also reflected in the work of Ruan Xiyue, a fourth-generation bearer of the Ruan family\u2019s gourd-carving tradition. Using a fine blade, Ruan demonstrated how figures, landscapes and calligraphy are engraved onto the surface of a small gourd. She then guided visiting media professionals as they tried the technique themselves.<\/p>\n

Lanzhou gourd carving has been passed down through generations and remains an important expression of the city\u2019s artistic heritage. Preserving the craft depends not only on protecting finished works, but also on ensuring that its techniques and knowledge continue to be taught and practised.<\/p>\n

Elyor Olimov, a journalist with the Uzbekistan National News Agency, had known Lanzhou mainly through news coverage before arriving.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my first visit to Lanzhou,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Seeing the city in person gave him a clearer understanding of its setting between two mountain ranges and its close relationship with the Yellow River. Olimov said he plans to report on environmental protection, urban development and life along the waterfront for readers in Central Asia.<\/p>\n

He is also looking forward to tasting authentic Lanzhou beef noodles. The dish remains an essential part of daily life for local residents and has become one of the city\u2019s most iconic symbols. Organizers said Lanzhou beef noodle restaurants now operate in more than 60 countries and regions, with more than 1,000 locations outside China.<\/p>\n

As the reporting tour continues, the media group will travel beyond central Lanzhou to the Ink-Wash Danxia landform and the ancient pear orchards of Shichuan in Gaolan County to explore the natural and agricultural histories that have shaped these distinctive landscapes.<\/p>\n
