2026

In a faraway northern land,
where snow covers the forests and winter stretches across the earth,
a spirit of justice was born, and compassion took root.

Across that vast land,
he could have lived a life of honor
as a physician—far from the smoke of war, safe and secure.
But he heard something else—far beyond the oceans,
the cry of a people in suffering.

And so, he came.

He crossed mountains and seas in the name of justice.
From the frozen forests of Canada,
he made his way to the mountains of China;
from the safety of the clinic,
he walked straight into the chaos of war.

He did not share the blood of the Chinese people,
yet he carried their wounds deep within his own heart.
He gave his strength, his skill, and ultimately his life,
so that dawn might rise after the long night of war.

Why did he come?

Not for fame.
Not for fortune.
Not for comfort.

And not because he was bound by any obligation to a foreign land.

He came because—

he believed in justice.
He believed in truth.
He believed that no people should ever be forced to remain silent in the face of humiliation and suffering.

And so, he stood up.

He stood for justice.
He searched for truth.
He rose above nationality and chose responsibility.

The operating table was his battlefield.
The scalpel was the blade with which he fought death.
Through smoke and gunfire, amid the chaos of war,
beneath the shadow of death,
he bent over the wounded again and again,
saving lives that were slipping away.

Hundreds of times.
Thousands of times.

He forgot his exhaustion.
He forgot his pain.
He even forgot—that he was simply a stranger who had come from far away.

Because in his eyes, pain has no nationality.
Life has no borders.
And justice belongs to no country.

But there was something deeper still.
He did not see the suffering of the Chinese people as someone else’s suffering.
He did not see their struggle as someone else’s struggle.
He made their liberation his own cause.
He made the hope of a people his own hope.

What kind of spirit was this?
It was internationalism that crossed mountains and seas.
It was compassion that rose above borders.
It was the courage to stand up when others needed him.
It was an unwavering faith in truth.

And above all—
it was the spirit of making another land one’s own;
of making another people’s freedom one’s own cause;
of fighting for an ideal, and remaining faithful to it until the very end.

He was forty-nine.

And there, in the midst of his greatest service,
his life came to an end.

He fell,
but the compassion of a physician remained forever in China.

He said goodbye,
but his idealism became part of the mountains and rivers of Taihang.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6465" do we still feel moved by you?
Why do we still look upon you with such admiration?

Because— justice without borders is the purest form of justice.
An ideal worth defending is an ideal worth honoring.
And true courage is to be the one who carries the flame through the longest night.

Fifty years have passed.

Time may weather the bricks and stones of this memorial,
but it cannot erase the name engraved deep in our history.
You came from the frozen forests of Canada,
and walked into the fires of war in China.
What you crossed was more than mountains and seas.

You crossed the boundaries of nationality, language, and culture.
What you sought was more than excellence in medicine.
You believed in something greater—
the dignity of human life and our shared humanity.
Crossing mountains and seas, standing for justice.

Rising above nationality, searching for truth.
These simple but powerful words describe the choice you made.
And they are also the answer you left for generations to come.
People may not share the same skin color or nationality,
yet they can share the same dream.
They may come from opposite sides of the world,
yet still embrace another people as their brothers and sisters.

Bethune, you were a foreigner.
But in the hearts of millions of Chinese people,
you were never an outsider.

Because you proved, with your life,
that ideals can cross mountains and seas,
that justice can rise above borders,
that truth can outlive generations,
and that a truly noble spirit can belong to all humanity.

Fifty years have passed.

This memorial has kept watch over your memory.
And today, we sing your story through poetry.

May this light travel across the mountains of Taihang,
across the forests of Canada, across the vast river of time—
may it illuminate the present,
may it illuminate the future,
and may it light the way for a world where ideals never die.

Bethune—a foreigner;
a man who crossed mountains and seas to stand for justice;
a man who rose above nationality in search of truth;
a man who made another people’s freedom his own cause,
who fought for an ideal, and gave his life to that ideal.

You belong not only to China.
You belong not only to Canada.
You belong—to the conscience we share as human beings,
to justice, to truth, and to every generation that still needs courage and light.

By Zenglu Lu Written on August 18, 2026 In a faraway northern land, where snow covers the forests and winter stretches across the earth, a
