Since Venerable Dayi Shi, President of the Buddhist Association of Canada and Abbot of Cham Shan Temple, inaugurated “Senior Care Month” in September 2022, the organization has dedicated four consecutive years to serving seniors through temple tours, nursing home visits, and complimentary mooncake distributions.

During this year’s initiative, Cham Shan Temple hosted seniors from several care facilities, including the Yee Hong Centre and Mon Sheong Foundation. Many visitors in their eighties and nineties attended alongside family members and caregivers. Monks and volunteers guided the guests through the temple grounds, sharing the rich cultural history of Cham Shan Temple and providing updates on the construction of Wutai Shan in Canada. The hosts also served healthy vegetarian lunches and fresh fruit. The visits provided a warm setting for multi-generational family outings, fostering deeper bonds between elders, their children, and grandchildren.

Venerable Dayi Shi emphasized that modern society rests on the hard work and dedication of previous generations. In light of the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, he encouraged the public to spend extra time with elderly relatives or connect through calls and messages.

For more than a decade, Cham Shan Temple staff and volunteers have hand-crafted low-sugar, low-salt, purely vegetarian mooncakes tailored to seniors’ dietary needs.
