The martial arts community mourns the passing of Grandmaster Sunny Tang, who passed away on October 5, 2026. Memorial and funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 10, in Richmond Hill, Ontario, where family, disciples, students, and community members will gather to honour his life and legacy.

Born in Hong Kong in 1946, Grandmaster Tang studied Wing Chun under the legendary Grandmaster Ip Man and his distinguished disciple, Moy Yat. These formative years laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to preserving and sharing the art.

After immigrating to Canada in 1973, he established the Sunny Tang Martial Arts Centre in Toronto and became a pioneer in the systematic teaching of Wing Chun across the country. He later founded Wushu Canada and served as its President. His international leadership roles included Executive Board Member of the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) and Vice President of the Pan-American Wushu Federation (PAWF).

Grandmaster Tang led the Canadian National Team at numerous international competitions and mentored generations of martial artists. Through his teaching and leadership, he helped Chinese martial arts flourish in Canada and strengthened connections across the international martial arts community.

His contributions to martial arts and multiculturalism were recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and his induction into the Canadian Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Grandmaster Tang leaves an enduring legacy in the students he guided, the organizations he built, and the traditions he helped preserve. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, disciples, students, and all who knew him.

May his memory continue to inspire generations to come.
