“The Last Spike” Tribute Dinner to Honour Chinese Railway Workers on November 7 in Toronto

0

Toronto — The Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada (FCCRWC) will host “The Last Spike,” an annual formal tribute dinner, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Casa Deluz Restaurant in Scarborough, Toronto. The event will commemorate the completion of Canada’s first transcontinental railway and honour the contributions and sacrifices of Chinese railway workers who helped build the nation.

This year’s tribute dinner will feature Citizenship Judge Albert Wong as the keynote speaker. A decorated veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, Wong also made history as the first Chief Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario of Chinese descent.

The evening will include traditional lion dance by Sifu Ian Chow, cultural performances presented by the Northern Legs and Southern Fists Kung Fu Club and performer Kanna Qiu.

As a federally registered Canadian charity, the FCCRWC is dedicated to preserving the legacy of early Chinese railway workers through public education, historical commemorations, and scholarship programs. Its ongoing efforts aim to ensure that the sacrifices and achievements of these pioneers are recognized and remembered by future generations.

The Chinese workers absent from the iconic photograph of the Last Spike should not remain absent from Canada's collective memory.

Commemorating “The Last Spike” is both a tribute to those who came before us and a reminder that the contributions of Chinese railway workers are an inseparable part of Canada’s history.
